LAKE MULWALA

New South Wales, Australia

History of Yarrawonga

Considered Mecca to many Murray Cod fisherman and a deserving tribute to one of the nicest places found on the Murray River. Lake Mulwala is part of the Murray River system and is bordered by the Victorian town of Yarrawonga and the New South Wales town of Mulwala. Yarrawonga is the main centre of these twin towns and has a large retail and commercial area that services a large part of this rural segment of Vic & NSW.

As a holiday destination it is one of the best on offer in the region with all people catered for with a huge plethora of accommodation to choose from. The main drawcard to this area is undoubtedly Lake Mulwala & the prestigious golf course, there is also many other places of interest that will keep you busy for the whole time you are there. A quick trip into the Information Centre in Yarrawonga right next to the bridge in the main street will be the best place to start planning your sight seeing itinerary. There you will be helped by the wonderful friendly staff who assist you in every way to ensure your stay is a pleasant one.

But our focus is on the locals who live here, not the ones that live on the land but the ones that have taken up residence in the lake since it was first built in the 1930's. They are of course the Murray Cod & the Golden Perch, there is also a remnant population of Redfin and of course the infamous European Carp which don't seem to be as abundant as they used to be but are still there in large numbers. There apparently is the odd Brown Trout but these days are very few. In the future we hope to see a few Macquarie Perch & Silver Perch but at this stage they are in very low numbers in this area but are more prevalent in the Murray River below the weir wall. Also below the weir wall a very healthy population of the endangered and fully protected Trout Cod seem to be making a good comeback but still have a long way to go to get their numbers up to a sustainable level. This part of the river is closed to all forms of fishing during the spring (Sept, Oct & Nov) each year and gives this unique part of the Murray river a chance to regenerate and is going along way to helping the Trout Cod and Silver Perch populations.

The lake offers some of the most diverse areas to fish and has something for every type of angler. The lake proper is not the only place to fish as there is the Murray River below the weir wall that offers some of the best lure casting action (March-May) that can be found on the Murray River and I mean it can be hot. Fishing this part of the river offers all anglers a good chance of finding a fish right throughout the year except for when the river is closed to all fishing during the spring. Back on the lake you can troll along all the channels and old river courses, get amongst the wooded area's or in the shallows of the lake at the start or the end of the day. The Mulwala channel is or sadly now, was another very popular spot at the right time of the year where the Golden Perch can really make your days fishing worthwhile but due to some unknown reason it has been fenced off.by the water authorities and is off limits to the public. Then for some of the best fishing that can be had you can explore the Bundalong area and into the Everglades on dusk. The Bundalong area is where the Murray River starts to transform into Lake Mulwala and offers some very productive deep holes and trolling runs along the main river course. Some of the biggest Cod have been found here and is a very productive section of waterway. The Everglades area is a very picturesque part of the lake and gets a fair share of visits from tourist boats and sight seers. It's an area where all visitors to this lake should take the time and have a look at this uniquely man made water haven for much of the water based wildlife is found in this region.

Visitors and holiday makers to this region will not be disappointed if Lake Mulwala  is their chosen destination. The accommodation facilities offered here are second to none and offer an affordable and comfortable place to lodge during your stay. The choices are many as there are caravan parks with cosy cabins, powered sites and camp sites with camp kitchens right on the lake and the Murray River. The Mulwala Ski club also offers exceptional Motel suites right on the lake with a great restaurant and night time entertainment. The Yarrawonga Golf Club also offers exceptional motel suites right on the golf course with a huge restaurant. There are many other motel lodgings dotted around the lake area and all offer reputable standards of accommodation. Go to the accommodation link below for a full listing.
