Record 1.2 million
native fish stocked into Victorian waters
Recreational anglers are the
big winners with the 2008/09 summer season
seeing a record number of native fish
stocked into Victorian waters. More than 1.2
million native fish were released into
waters throughout Victoria between December
last year and May this year, despite some of
our major storages being seriously affected
by the drought. The increase has been
achieved by creating new fisheries in
previously unstocked waters and adjusting
stocking numbers in some of our larger and
better performing lakes. This year, 200,000
golden perch and 50,000 Murray cod were
released into the Nagambie Lakes system in
the hope that in years to come these Lakes
will develop into premier native fishing
locations. Lake Eildon and Lake Hume also
received more than 400,000 native fish
between them, while rivers such as the
Loddon, Campaspe, Goulburn and Mitta Mitta
all received good numbers of fish.
Preliminary results from a Fisheries
Victoria research project at the Kerang
Lakes also show that by stocking Murray cod
and golden perch, significant contributions
are made to native fish populations and this
is strongly supported by recreational
anglers. Stocking is an important tool used
by Fisheries Victoria in the management of
our native fisheries, enhancing recreational
fishing opportunities for all Victorians.

New Victorian Fishing Regulations have
been finalised and come into effect March 2009. Murray Cod
minimum will be increased from 50cm to 60cm
with a bag limit still being 2 but no Murray
Cod over 100cm will be allowed to be taken.
Last year the Albury
Wodonga Border Mail newspaper sent a
journalist and photographer to trace the
Murray River from source to sea. Read about
their journey on the paper’s website.
Murray cod Management Arrangements Paper
Fisheries
Victoria have developed a paper that
outlines challenges, opportunities and
future management direction for the Murray
cod fishery.
A new closed season for
Murray cod will come into effect from
January 1, 2009 and continue until July 31
when the existing seasonal closure (August 1
to December 31) comes into effect.
These new arrangements effectively close the
Murray cod fishery to all fishing activity
for all of 2009.
Murray Cod catch limit and legal length
GD Editors note:
Due to the ongoing drought and very poor
water flow the SA Fisheries Minister has
take it upon himself to deem this the very
reason why SA Murray Cod are not breeding so
they feel that a closure of Murray Cod
fishery for the entire 2009 will help to
save the population. We here at
GoodooDreaming.com certainly back any plan
to help assist our fisheries but feel this
is a very heavy handed knee jerk reaction
that will not only effect local SA commerce
but effectively deprive sensible and caring
anglers of their much loved sport.

Our Lure Choice For Lake Mulwala
The
Clearwater Ledgebuster
Spinnerbait
is one of our best kept secrets
for
fishing Lake Mulwala. These are larger than normal
spinnerbaits (3/4oz to 2-1/2oz) and
are uniquely plated in gold and silver which make them
ideal bait presentations. The
gold
is the pick
for when the water clarity is good. The bait head, hook
and wire of this
spinnerbait are plated in 24ct gold and then add to this
the large 24ct gold willow blade and you have the best
bit of Cod "Bling Bling" on the water.
Sitting on top of
Victoria's Otway ranges, 164m above sea level and around an
unbelievable 4.5hrs drive south of the mighty Murray river
there is a water impoundment that is nothing short of being
paradise or even Mecca for the catch & release Murray Cod
angler. Timber Lake is a couple of kilometres west of Forest
and is a private fishery that is run by Mike Wallis from
Clearwater Tours.

The Murray
Cod is the largest freshwater fish in Australia that
has been recorded to grow up to 183cm long and weigh
113kg. (6ft long & 250lbs in weight)
It is the most prized of fish
in the south eastern parts of Australia but
unfortunately due to its popularity and changes to
its environment since European settlement it has become listed on the
endangered species list. Large fish are harder to
come by in this day and age and its through this
website and others like it that we can educate its visitors to the
benefits of the catch & release methodology and
better handling techniques to enhance its chance of
sustainability. Closed season is September till the
end of November each year.
The Trout Cod is fully protected under law in Victoria & New
South Wales, Australia. It is commonly found in the Murray River
between Yarrawonga and the Barmah Forest and also in The Seven
Creeks area near Euroa, Victoria. These are the two only known
areas the Trout Cod have been known to breed. Fishing is
prohibited all year round in the Seven Creeks area and also a
small section of the Murray River from the Yarrawonga weir to
Cobram is closed to all fishing throughout the Spring season.
The Trout Cod is often mistaken for a Murray Cod and many
uneducated anglers have at times taken them thinking they are
Murray Cod. The penalties for keeping Trout Cod are severe so if
you are fishing in waters where Trout Cod have been known to be
present get yourself educated on the difference between the two
species and release them in the best possible condition to
ensure their survival.
BRIDGEWATER LURES
are some of the best Spinnerbaits made locally for the local
waterways of the Murray Daring Basin. The Goodoo Dreaming team have
been using these quality Spinnerbaits with some very good success.
